AccessPC 3.0 has a new manual designed to get you up and running, and find information, as quickly as possible. While you can install and use AccessPC without using the manual, you might find it helps to take a quick look.
How To Install AccessPC
======================
AccessPC 3.0 is installed using Apple's Installer. The installer takes care of whether you are running System 6 or System 7.
AccessPC 2.0 users
======================
The AccessPC 3.0 installer does not retain the mappings set-up by version 2 users. The mapping files are compatible and if you wish to retain your mappings move the file ~AccessPC Data out of the System Folder before installation. After installation has completed move the file back to the System folder, over-writing the newly installed data file. Then re-boot your machine.
The practice folder
=================
On the disk 'AccessPC® install 1' is a folder 'Practice' which contains some files to try with extension mapping and translation. To use these files, format a disk as a DOS disk and copy the files onto that disk. Now try opening the files, mapping the extensions and opening them or dragging them to a document converter.
Assigning MS-DOS files to Mac applications
=======================================
The manual describes how to assign a MS-DOS file extension to a Macintosh application. The following table lists some common assignments:
PC File Extension & Application Mac Application Creator File Type
There are a few known problems that you could encounter when using AccessPC 3.0
Most are rare, however, and it’s unlikely they will affect you.
AccessPC installer and Macintosh PC Exchange
------------------------------------
The AcesssPC 3.0 installer does not remove PC Exchange if it exists in the control panels folder. If you have PC Exchange and are installing AccessPC, you should manually remove it from the control panels folder.
AccessPC control panel
---------------------
In certain low memory conditions when the AccessPC control panel is opened the icons for the application and file type can be corrupted. If the memory conditions are even lower the control panel may not open and the following error reported.
'The control panel "~AccessPC" cannot be used now.
There may not be enough memory available, or control panel may be damaged"
This will only effect the operation of the control panel and will not effect the mounting of DOS media. Once in this state the control panel can only be opened after re-booting the Mac.
Floppy Disk Users
----------------
1. WordPerfect/Mac 2.0 and WingZ may have problems saving a PC file onto a DOS disk. This is because the applications create a Mac “resource fork” for DOS files. If you turn on the “Save Mac Info To Disk” in the AccessPC control panel, these problems will not occur.
2. Copying a disk by dragging a DOS disk icon onto a DOS or Mac disk icon will not work.
3. The DaynaFile will be unable to format a 360K floppy as a Mac disk. This has no practical value anyway.
4. “Directory Assistance” in Norton Utilities will have problems with DOS disks.
Iomega Drive Users
--------------------
1. When using the Iomega LaserSafe removable drive, the Iomega driver should be installed and Multi-Driver removed from the Control Panels folder. The Iomega Workshop software should be used for formatting Mac cartridges.
Spreadsheet translation
----------------------
The primary purpose of the spreadsheet translators are for taking text from spreadsheets to word processing applications and vice-versa. If you are transferring files between spreadsheets and wish to retain all of the formatting information, you should either open the documents from within the spreadsheet application or use AccessPC's extension mapping features. Further detailed information can be found in the user guide addendum, Using AccessPC with Spreadsheets .
Macintosh Easy Open
-------------------
There is a problem with the Macintosh Easy Open software which effects the operation of the 'Document Converter'. If there are more than 63 translation options as shown in the 'Document Converter' list, the list will be truncated to 64 options. The omitted translation options will not be available. This also gives rise to two other problems: Dragging a folder to the 'Document Converter' will not work; Translation via the Open File dialog of Macintosh applications will not be available. It is advisable to install only the translators you require to keep the number of options below 63. The Easy Install will install a recommended set which gives about 55 options.
Note: Most translators contain more than one translation option, for example the Mac Word translator provides options for version 3, 4 and 5.
If you are using a local System that is not US, UK, French or German then the Document Converter will display the same string for all Microsoft Word translation options. The options will be in a consistent order in the list which should be: Word for DOS; Word for Mac version 3; Word for Mac version 4; Word for Mac version 5; Word for Windows version 1; Word for Windows version 2.
